GEOGRAPHY

Mauritius is a volcanic island situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2400 kilometres off the South East Coast of Africa. Its highest peak, Piton de la Rivière Noire, reaches around 828 m in altitude and its breathtaking 330 km coastline is surrounded almost entirely by one of the world’s largest unbroken coral reefs.

EDUCATION

Northfields International High School in the Pamplemousses district is considered one of the leading independent international private schools. The University of Mauritius and the University of Middlesex is located in the central part of the western region. Other educational facilities include the International Preparatory School, Le Bocage International School and Charles Telfair Institute. The island’s capital, Port Louis, is home to the University of Technology, a leading tertiary educational institution.

CULTURE

Mauritius has a rich, eclectic culture, with just over half its population Hindu, another fifth Muslim, and the remaining composed mainly of Creoles and Franco-Mauritians. The resultant diverse mix of cuisines — including Chinese, Indian, French and African – is one of the island’s highlights, as is the distinctive beat of the creole sega music and dance.

The island has numerous craft and food markets offering a range of Mauritian and Malagasy supplies. In Grand Baie, in the north of Mauritius, head to La Croisette Shopping center, The Sunset Boulevard or SuperU Hypermarket, which boasta large variety of shops including food stores, electronics, jewellery, clothing and even Cinema’s. Situated in Port Louis, the Caudan Waterfront is a large commercial development offers a mix of shops, banks, casinos, cinemas, restaurants and more. The Cascavelle Shopping Village near Flic en Flac has a variety of shops, food outlets and a supermarket, and in Tamarin the Ruisseau Creaole Limitee, Barachois shopping centre and Bagatelle mall have a similar makeup.

CLIMATE

Mauritius enjoys a typically tropical climate with year round sun. In summer (November to April), coastal temperatures range between 25° C to 33° C. Winter (May to October) is cooler and drier with the average inland temperature around 19° C. The rainy season occurs from January to March, especially on the central plateau.

HEALTHCARE

Mauritius has a selection of hospitals, clinics and medical facilities – private and public. Centre Medical du Nord in Grand Baie is equipped for casualties, as well as day and overnight care. The Victoria Hospital is situated close to Flic en Flac and Tamarin. Further south in Port Louis, the Labourdonnais Court Medical Centre boasts a number of medical professionals including GPs, specialists and pharmacies.
